The Endless Blue
The oldest known race in the galaxy, the ancient Fey are masters of magic and can shape the living world as a potter shapes clay. In eons past they set up the network of Fairy Rings that connect most civilized worlds to Etherspace, and are responsible for “uplifting” almost every other sentient race currently active in the galaxy, whether jumpstarting their advancement with gifts of technology or biologically altering more primitive species to force evolution, though they have in recent centuries forbidden themselves from doing so after The Scourge.
The Fey are actually a collection of different but related races that originated from experiments to improve or alter their own stock. The haughty and manipulative Eladrin claim to be the original Fey, or at least the closest to such lofty ascended beings, and are technically immortal; they think of themselves as shepherds of the “lesser” races, and treat all nonsentient life as part of their “garden,” tending and pruning and bringing out beauty and perfection of form and function. The solitary Elves live closer to what they claim are the Fey roots, disdaining the way their cousins reshape the natural world at whim and instead choosing to live as much as possible in harmony and balance. Mischievous and clever gnomes and pixies, wise centaurs and mysterious dryads, and other creatures seemingly straight out of human myth can all be found seeded among worlds the Fey have visited.
